Predicted vs Actual Water Level

NOAA Richmond gauge · last 24 hours

Tide predictions cover only the pull of the moon and sun. NOAA's Richmond gauge, about 6 miles away, measures the real water level every 6 minutes, so the gap between the two lines is the weather: storm surge, wind, air pressure and runoff. The same gap usually holds across this part of the bay.

Corte Madera Creek Tides From Kentfield to the Bay

Corte Madera Creek tides set the water level from the Kentfield marsh down to Larkspur Landing. Tides here are predicted from NOAA’s Corte Madera Creek station, right on the creek near Larkspur and Corte Madera.

The creek starts in Ross, where San Anselmo Creek and Ross Creek meet, and flows about 4.5 miles southeast. It turns tidal at Kentfield, runs through more than a mile of concrete channel, and ends in salt marsh at the bay. Every high tide pushes bay water back up the channel toward Kentfield.

The Ferry Channel

Golden Gate ferries have run from Larkspur since December 1976. The boats need a dredged channel to reach the terminal. It is 13,000 feet long and kept about 13 feet deep, and silt fills it in at roughly half a foot a year, so it has to be dredged again and again.

Marsh and King Tides

The Corte Madera Marsh Ecological Reserve covers about 620 acres of salt marsh near the creek mouth, with cordgrass, pickleweed and salt grass. The water below the mean high tide line is a state marine park. Only hand-carried boats are allowed, and swimming and wading are not. The marsh and mudflats draw migratory shorebirds and waterfowl in fall and winter.

Low streets near the marsh flood when the bay runs high. During high-tide flooding in October 2026, Golden Hind Passage in Corte Madera and Larkspur Plaza Drive at Creekside were closed.

About Tides at Corte Madera Creek

How the tide works at Corte Madera Creek

Corte Madera Creek gets mixed semidiurnal tides, the usual pattern on the California coast: two highs and two lows most days, with one high noticeably higher than the other and one low noticeably lower. The lower low is the one that uncovers the most shore.

A typical day here swings about 5.5 ft from low water to the next high. The biggest spring tides of the next month stretch that to about 8.3 ft, and the quietest neap days shrink it to about 2.4 ft. The next spring tides peak around Nov 9.

Where the Corte Madera Creek predictions come from

Every time and height is a NOAA prediction for NOAA's Corte Madera Creek tide station (9414874), right at Corte Madera Creek. It is a reference station, with predictions calculated from harmonic constituents measured at that spot.

The curve between each high and low is drawn with the standard cosine method, so heights between the turns are close estimates. Weather can move the real water level: strong onshore wind and low air pressure raise it, and offshore wind and high pressure lower it. Read more on how tide predictions work.

Reading the tide clock, table and chart

The tide clock's hand sweeps from high tide at the top to low tide at the bottom and back, one full turn per tidal cycle of about 12 hours and 25 minutes. The countdowns on either side show the time to the next high and the next low.

The day picker and the 7-day table list each turn of the tide with its time and height. On the chart, each crest is a high and each trough a low; shaded bands are night. Heights are feet above mean lower low water, so a negative number is a minus tide. Our guide on how to read a tide chart goes further.

Corte Madera Creek Tide Questions

Where does Corte Madera flood at king tides?

Low streets along the marsh and the creek are the ones to watch. During high-tide flooding in October 2026, Marin County closed Golden Hind Passage in Corte Madera and Larkspur Plaza Drive at Creekside. A king tide on top of a winter storm can push water farther into these neighborhoods.

Why does the Larkspur ferry channel need dredging?

Corte Madera Creek carries silt that settles in the ferry channel. Golden Gate Ferry says the channel is 13,000 feet long and is dredged to keep it 13 feet deep, and silt builds up at about half a foot a year. Regular dredging keeps the route deep enough for the ferries to reach the terminal.

Can you kayak in the Corte Madera Marsh?

Yes, with limits. The waters of the Corte Madera Marsh State Marine Park allow only lightweight, hand-carried boats, so kayaks and canoes are fine and motorboats are not. Swimming, wading and diving are not allowed, and fishing is hook-and-line from shore only.

What time is high tide at Corte Madera Creek today?

The panel at the top lists today's highs and lows at Corte Madera Creek with their times and heights, and the tide clock counts down to the next high and the next low. Times are Pacific time and heights are in feet above mean lower low water (MLLW).

How big is the tide at Corte Madera Creek?

Over the next 30 days the daily swing at Corte Madera Creek runs from about 2.4 ft on the quietest neap days to 8.3 ft on the biggest spring tides, with 5.5 ft on a typical day. Like the rest of the California coast, most days bring two highs and two lows of unequal size.

Where do the Corte Madera Creek tide times come from?

They are astronomical predictions from NOAA's Corte Madera Creek tide station (9414874), right at Corte Madera Creek. Wind, storms, river runoff and air pressure can push the real water level higher or lower than predicted, so treat them as a planning guide, not a guarantee, and never use them for navigation.
