Predicted vs Actual Water Level

NOAA San Francisco (Golden Gate) gauge · last 24 hours

Tide predictions cover only the pull of the moon and sun. NOAA's San Francisco (Golden Gate) gauge, about 5 miles away, measures the real water level every 6 minutes, so the gap between the two lines is the weather: storm surge, wind, air pressure and runoff. The same gap usually holds across this part of the bay.

Tiburon Tides and the Currents in Raccoon Strait

Tiburon tides come about half an hour after the Golden Gate’s, based on NOAA’s offsets for Point Chauncey. Tides here are predicted from NOAA’s Point Chauncey station, about a mile and a half away.

What most boaters care about off Tiburon is the current, not the height. Raccoon Strait is the deep, narrow channel between the Tiburon Peninsula and Angel Island, close to the mouth of the bay. Water near Point Tiburon is about 15 fathoms (90 feet) deep. NOAA predicts ebbs of more than 2 knots in the strait on bigger tides and close to 4 knots off Point Stuart on Angel Island. The ebb runs stronger than the flood.

Crossing to Angel Island

Angel Island has no roads or bridges, so you get there by the ferry from Tiburon or your own boat. Private boats can tie up at the day-use docks or the overnight mooring buoys in Ayala Cove, on the island’s west side. Angel Island State Park asks boaters to use caution near the docks. A paddler crossing the strait does best near slack water, when the current is weakest.

Paradise Beach and Belvedere

Paradise Beach Park is a 19-acre county park on the east shore of the peninsula with a fishing pier. No fishing license is needed on a public pier in California.

On the west side of Tiburon and Belvedere, low tide opens mudflats in Richardson Bay. From October 1 to March 31, about 900 acres of that water are closed to boats and paddlers for wintering birds. You can still watch them from shore at Blackie’s Pasture.

About Tides at Tiburon

How the tide works at Tiburon

Tiburon gets mixed semidiurnal tides, the usual pattern on the California coast: two highs and two lows most days, with one high noticeably higher than the other and one low noticeably lower. The lower low is the one that uncovers the most shore.

A typical day here swings about 5.8 ft from low water to the next high. The biggest spring tides of the next month stretch that to about 8.5 ft, and the quietest neap days shrink it to about 3.0 ft. The next spring tides peak around Nov 9.

Where the Tiburon predictions come from

Every time and height is a NOAA prediction for NOAA's Point Chauncey tide station (9414837), about 1.5 miles away. It is a subordinate station: NOAA predicts its highs and lows by applying time and height offsets to the San Francisco (Golden Gate) reference station.

The curve between each high and low is drawn with the standard cosine method, so heights between the turns are close estimates. Weather can move the real water level: strong onshore wind and low air pressure raise it, and offshore wind and high pressure lower it. Read more on how tide predictions work.

Reading the tide clock, table and chart

The tide clock's hand sweeps from high tide at the top to low tide at the bottom and back, one full turn per tidal cycle of about 12 hours and 25 minutes. The countdowns on either side show the time to the next high and the next low.

The day picker and the 7-day table list each turn of the tide with its time and height. On the chart, each crest is a high and each trough a low; shaded bands are night. Heights are feet above mean lower low water, so a negative number is a minus tide. Our guide on how to read a tide chart goes further.

Tiburon Tide Questions

How strong is the current in Raccoon Strait?

Strong for the bay. NOAA's current predictions for Raccoon Strait show ebbs topping 2 knots on bigger tides, and close to 4 knots off Point Stuart on Angel Island. The ebb runs harder than the flood, so kayakers and small boats should plan crossings near slack water.

Do you need a fishing license at Paradise Beach Park in Tiburon?

Not on the pier. California lets anglers fish without a license from a public pier in ocean or bay waters, and the Paradise Beach pier qualifies. Off the pier, from the beach or a boat, anglers 16 and older need a license. Size and bag limits still apply on the pier.

Is Richardson Bay closed to kayaks off Tiburon?

Yes, in winter. From October 1 to March 31, about 900 acres of Richardson Bay on the Tiburon and Belvedere side are closed to boats, kayaks and paddleboards. The closure, marked by buoys and pilings, protects wintering ducks, geese and shorebirds.

What time is high tide at Tiburon today?

The panel at the top lists today's highs and lows at Tiburon with their times and heights, and the tide clock counts down to the next high and the next low. Times are Pacific time and heights are in feet above mean lower low water (MLLW).

How big is the tide at Tiburon?

Over the next 30 days the daily swing at Tiburon runs from about 3.0 ft on the quietest neap days to 8.5 ft on the biggest spring tides, with 5.8 ft on a typical day. Like the rest of the California coast, most days bring two highs and two lows of unequal size.

Where do the Tiburon tide times come from?

They are astronomical predictions from NOAA's Point Chauncey tide station (9414837), about 1.5 miles away. Wind, storms, river runoff and air pressure can push the real water level higher or lower than predicted, so treat them as a planning guide, not a guarantee, and never use them for navigation.
