Marin Flooding Questions

Where does Marin flood at high tide?

The first places to take water are low roads, paths and parking lots right at the bay edge: the Manzanita park and ride and Shoreline Highway by Highway 101, the Mill Valley to Sausalito path along Bothin Marsh, streets near the San Rafael Canal, low parts of Corte Madera and Larkspur, and Gate 5 Road in Sausalito. On the coast, Seadrift and the road into downtown Bolinas are the usual trouble spots.

What tide height causes flooding in Marin?

Trouble usually starts when the tide at the Golden Gate gets to about 7 ft above MLLW, which happens during king tides a few times each winter. A storm can push the water a foot or more above the tide tables, so a 6.5 ft tide on a stormy day can flood like a 7.5 ft one. The live gauge readings on this page show how far above the tables the water is running.

Does Corte Madera Creek flood?

Yes, in heavy rain. The National Weather Service gauge at Ross counts 17 ft as flood stage, and the highest crest on record there is 22.59 ft on December 31, 2005, when Ross, San Anselmo and Kentfield flooded. Creek flooding is worst when a big storm lines up with a high tide, because the bay backs water up the lower creek.

Where can I check road closures in Marin?

Caltrans QuickMap at quickmap.dot.ca.gov shows closures on Highway 101, Highway 1 and Highway 37, and 511.org covers Bay Area traffic. Marin County and each town post local street closures during storms.

Live readings from NOAA CO-OPS tide gauges, the NWS National Water Prediction Service and National Weather Service alerts. They can lag or drop out during storms. For emergencies call 911, and follow Marin County and NWS San Francisco Bay Area for official warnings.
